This patch's lethality changes certainly did a number on several crown favorites this patch. Meanwhile, the Ryze nerfs continue to pummel an already suffering solo queue champion in order to make things more fair at the professional level.

Lastly, we have the introduction of the new Stornborn Pact mastery. It still seems weak compared to Courage of the Colossus, but it's a welcome addition to Olaf and Nunu's mastery choices.

Preface Chatter

This patch's lethality changes certainly did a number on several crown favorites this patch. Meanwhile, the Ryze nerfs continue to pummel an already suffering solo queue champion in order to make things more fair at the professional level.

Lastly, we have the introduction of the new Stornborn Pact mastery. It still seems weak compared to Courage of the Colossus, but it's a welcome addition to Olaf and Nunu's mastery choices.

    Instructions and Caveats:

    • Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
    • Champions UNDERLINEDmay be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
    • Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
    • Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
    • Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
    • The creator of this list is diamond, so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.

    Champion Explanations

    • Aurelion Sol [Tier 1 Mid] - In his current state, Aurelion Sol is still a very underrated mid-laner. His burst damage is surprisingly high for a sustained damage dealer, and the health pool he gets from Hextech GLP-800 and Rylais makes him quite difficult to kill, even if he gets hit by crowd-control. As a champion his kit is certainly very unique to his playstyle, but it could be worth mastering if you enjoy the concept.
    • Braum [Tier 1 Support] - Braum provides one of the best Lucian support synergies in the game. With Lucian on the rise, it makes sense that Braum is now worth more in solo queue as well. Meanwhile, the new Stoneborn Pact works well on him, though I think Colossus may still be better.
    • Kog'Maw [God Tier Marksman] - The latest Blade of the Ruined King changes make him quite powerful. When you combine this with the lethality nerfs and general marksman nerfs all-around, Kog'Maw becomes an excellent choice in solo queue. His point and click damage abilities also do well against the highly mobile mage-like marksmen like Lucian and Ezreal.
    • Leblanc [Tier 1 Mid] - Riot's nerf to Leblanc's Distortion [W] was absolutely brutal. If you try and play her in her old style of maxing Distortion first, she's probably around Tier 4. However, her Shatter Orb [Q] max followed by Ethereal Chains [E] is still quite good, especially since they increased her wave clear ability with that skill.
    • Lucian [Tier 1 Marksman] - Lucian's buffs look fairly subtle on the surface, but they really make him quite a bit more responsive and allows him to cleanly scale into late game.
    • Lulu [God Tier Support] - Lulu's been a bit of a sleeper pick since she's more of a hybrid shield/damage support rather than a pure shield support. However, as redemption was nerfed, she's slightly more even with the strongest shield/heal supports. The assassin meta also allows her to be very effective as a kill denial tool to keep the marksmen alive.
    • Miss Fortune [Tier 4 Support] - As the meta moves away from Zyra support and Miss Fortune was hit with a few nerfs, her abilities as a support are pretty weak now. Her Make It Rain [E] still does a ton of damage, but there are really better supports you could be playing.
    • Nunu [Tier 1 Jungle] - Nunu's been completely ignored as a jungle for the past few patches mostly because none of the keystone masteries really did much for him. However, the introduction of the latest Stornborn Pact mastery allows him to start being quite powerful. His max rank Ice Blast [E] has a four second cooldown. Incidentally, Stornborn Pact stays active on movement impairing abilities. Meanwhile, it scales with health, and few junglers can stack health quite as well as a Cinderhulk Nunu with Consume.
    • Rengar [Tier 2 Jungle] - Rengar's changes this patch leave him quite a bit more vulnerable to turnaround ganks. This leads to weaker snowballing early game and falling behind. If you're good at him he's still a powerhouse since his damage wasn't changed, but there's more counterplay available against him than before.
    • Ryze [Tier 3 Mid] - Ryze was never really in a great spot for solo queue to begin with, despite being a competitive scene powerhouse. This last patch really did him in, and I would really stay away from him unless you happen to be a monster Ryze.
    • Teemo [Tier 1 Top] - Teemo has always been a champion that most player consider a bit of a troll. He's extremely lane dominant, but has difficulty during team fights. However, His Hextech Gunblade build is incredibly strong, and allows him to actually soak a decent bit of damage via lifesteal. In kite-based team comps and AOE crowd control teams, he performs quite well and currently deals the highest average damage of any top laner in the game.
    • Tryndamere [Tier 1 Top] - The latest Blade of the Ruined King changes made him quite a bit stronger. Although the active was always good, Tryndamere's monster attack speed stacking builds definitely give him a lot more bang for his buck with the BoTRK rework.
