Instructions and Caveats:
- Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
- Champions UNDERLINEDmay be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
- Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
- This tier list takes data from ALL players; however, since the majority of players fall in the first three tiers, the majority of data points will come from there.
- Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
- The creator of this list is diamond, so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.
Champion Explanations
- Jayce [God Tier Top] - Riot really wanted us to pick Jayce back up, but tried very hard not to make him toxic again. As a result, we ended up with a melee form heavy Jayce that no longer spams his tear build. Instead, most Jayces now opt for armor penetration stacking for MAXIMUM damage. By picking up an early Youmuu's Ghostblade and Black Cleaver, he has the ability to 100 to 0 enemies with his combo, just not on a 3 second cooldown.
- Karma [Tier 2 Support] - Karma is extremely popular in professional play, but not necessarily because she's the "best" support. As a flex pick, Karma is very good for juking the enemy team as she fits into a variety of team compositions. However, her skills really shine when you team can coordinate engagements and retreats. In the world of solo queue, your ultimate often just leaves the team split as half runs quickly one way and half runs quickly the opposite.
- Lucian [Tier 2 Marksman] - Many people see Lucian in Tier 2 and say "win rates aren't everything, this lists sucks". However, the fact of the matter is that Lucian does not beat the meta, he simply IS the meta. Everyone plays him, and thus champions that dominate him in lane do well. Meanwhile, his late-game relies on a strong early, which is largely dependent on your support. In solo queue, this makes it a hit or miss, although he can get very snowbally.
- Miss Fortune [Tier 3 Support] - Oh this one. make sure you read the full article on Miss Fortune support, but essentially she's a niche pick. Only get her if you have Jhin or Ashe on your team, and preferably only if the enemy team is running some sort of poke support (Zyra). Otherwise, she's a fairly subpar pick. Her laning phase is excellent, which might lead people to pick her more often, but her strength with and against jungle ganks is quite poor. You will need the support of your team to make sure the pick is effective, which again, may be lacking in solo queue.
- Nami [Tier 1 Support] - Against Jhin, Nami is God Tier for certain, however, she is a more average pick against the majority of other lanes. Even if you play her up against Jhin for a potential free win, watch out for Braum as he can make the easy win a bit more difficult. For those of you that are unsure of what I mean, just throw your ultimate at Jhin every time he uses his ultimate for the luls.
- Nunu [God Tier Jungle] - Despite the nerfs on Nunu this patch, he remains a very strong pick in solo queue. He is intensely tanky and does a good amount of damage. This allows him to tower dive squishies with ease, and his ultimate now does very good damage as a result of the changes to the slow. However, it's easy to get lulled into a false sense of security when you realize enemy champions do no damage to you, so keep in mind that his late game is not very good unless your marksman gets fed.
- Vayne [Tier 1 Marksman] - The "new" crit build on Vayne covers a lot of her previous weaknesses and actually makes her quite viable for being Vayne in a lane dominant meta. The Statikk Shiv allows her to clear waves early to mid game, and the Infinity Edge gives her burst damage without relying on the third shot. This makes her extremely effective against both squishies and tanks. Additionally, she does well against a lot of the popular marksman like Jhin and Ashe (mid-game) as a result of her ability to tumble their core spells.
- Zyra [Tier 2 Mid] - Zyra is almost never seen mid-lane anymore, which is somewhat of a pity. She's certainly a sleeper pick at the moment, and pretty much only seen as a support (92% of the time). However, she does an insane amount of damage for relatively few items, and can build just as tanky as other sustained damage mid-laners. Her main drawback is how squishy she is, but you could say that about a lot of other mid-laners. I personally think she's very underrated in the role right now.
- The purpose of this list is for discussion and to provide a starting point for champion selection.
