Patch 10.4 Tier List Update Summary
Shenanigans top lane finally died down with some hard nerfs to Soraka and Sona this patch. Sona's actually still good top lane despite the nerfs, but players appear to be getting bored of the whole concept and you can finally go back to playing against melee champions.Meanwhile, the jungle buffs don't appear to be doing anything useful as expected considering the champion pool that they buffed jungle minion damage on. It's leading to more counter-jungling from top and mid-laners, but otherwise nobody's doing the full migration to the woods yet.

Instructions and Caveats
- Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
- Champions UNDERLINEDmay be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
- Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier, each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
- Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
- Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for the solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
- The creator of this list is diamond so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.
League of Legends Tier List Descriptions
God Tier: These champions are almost impossible to keep down. If your team doesn't make it a priority to shut down these champions and shut them down hard, even if they lose their lane, lose in CS, and it's their first time playing the champion, they can be a massive nuisance for your team. On the other hand, if they're actually good at the champion...that's when it's time to throw in the towel.Tier 1: These champions generally do very well regardless, and have some sort of advantage over most other champions. When they do well, their team does well. Even when they don't do well, their team still has a good chance of a comeback victory by utilizing one or more aspects of their late-game utility.
Tier 2: This is the Tier of balanced champions where Riot shoots to place their designs. These champions generally do well in their own right and are very strong picks with a good chance of winning. However, they're not overpowered by any means and do have their weaknesses.
Tier 3: These champions can still do very well, but tend to need a little more snowballing to get rolling. Even if they get an early lead, it's still very possible to turn the tides on them with just a mistake or two. They may also have some weaknesses that can be capitalized on.
Tier 4: These champions are either underpowered or offer less reward than other champions for the same amount of effort. These champions basically start winning from the get-go or get made fun of for the rest of the game. They need gold to do their job correctly, and if they don't get enough of it, they become sandbags for the enemy team to punch. Chances of a comeback with one of these champions feeding on your team is almost none.
Thoughts on Win Rates
With enough playtime, a high win rate on a champion indicates *something* generally goes right, and a low win rate indicates that whatever is happening in games with this champion isn't in their favor.A low win rate may mean a champion is being played incorrectly and is stronger than his win rate indicates, but a top 25 win rate (with 120 champions) almost always indicates that a champion is at least a good candidate for Tier 1 or high Tier 2 if the sample size is large enough.
This means that champions with high win rates do not mean that they're necessarily GOOD right now, especially if they have a low play rate or tend to get into favorable match-ups. If we feel this is the case, these champions will place differently on this tier list than you'd think.
Similarly, champions with low win rates that are still within the acceptable deviations may end up slightly higher than you'd expect from a champion with mediocre win rates.
If there are champions on this tier list with low overall play rates but good win rates after relatively few games of practice, it may mean that players that pick those champions up just to try them are bringing down the average. If this is the case, we will place them higher on the list.
More thoughts on win rates here.
Counter Picking Champions
In Tier 3 of this tier list, we've placed certain champions that are good as a second pick, but can get spanked hard if they end up first picking by a variety of meta champions. If you're good at a large variety of champions, picking a champion that counters your lane is a good place to start. If you can get a slight advantage and don't have a clear experience advantage, picking a champion that both places high on this tier list and also counters your enemy lane may give you enough to win a game.Check out a few of our more popular champion counter guides:
LoL Tier List Champion Explanations
Ashe [God Tier Marksman]
Ashe's success in the current meta is largely a testament to the amount of high CC top laners in today's meta. Her ultimate chains perfect into a variety of combos and beefy front lines give her the ability to enemy champions at will. In lane, she's one of the safest marksmen in the game and is perfectly capable of fighting it out with long-range bullies like Caitlyn, Miss Fortune, and Senna. Overall she's a very solid pick and valuable in any team comp.
Hecarim [Tier 1 Jungle]
Most players are sleeping on Hecarim. He hasn't been in the spotlight for quite some time, but as other jungle champions in the meta are nerfed he's beginning to climb back up...slowly. Overall his clear speed is decent compared to other jungle champions and the only thing that really sets him back is his early game duel potential. Otherwise, he remains a powerful mid-game champion with heavy crowd-control and snowball potential.
Karthus [Tier 1 Jungle]
Karthus tends to be a very underrated jungle champion. He's obviously not the world's greatest duelist and tends to lose out to the majority of early game jungle champions if he gets invaded. On the other hand, he also clears camps much faster than most other jungle champions and doesn't have to use any valuable cooldowns while clearing camps. This means that provided he doesn't get smashed early, he generally snowballs into an ultra-high damage jungle champion that dishes out a great deal more than the current meta's early game jungles.
Kled [Tier 1 Top]
Although Sona an Soraka were nerfed this patch, top lane still remains dominated by high healing champions like Darius and Aatrox. Kled's built-in heal reduction is extremely valuable against champions like these and he can easily dominate his lane. Overall, his ultimate is not as impactful as someone like Ornn in the current meta. However, it's still an excellent engaging tool that will catch many teams off-guard.
Ornn [God Tier Top]
Ornn is firmly cementing himself as the dominant top lane champion. He essentially has no bad match-ups, and is capable of dishing out significant amounts of damage with full tank items. Now that players have computed the optimal Sunfire Cape and Abyssal Mask for his upgrades, he also unlocked the full power of his shop and is capable of providing an optimal stat boost to his team as a whole.
Shyvana [Tier 1 Jungle]
AP Shyvana tends to be seen as a gimmick by most players, but it's actually quite good. Her cooldowns are low enough that she can use her fireball without feeling completely useless while it's down, and the range gives her a safe yet incredibly powerful nuke to play with.
Sona [Tier 1 Top]
Despite the nerfs to Sona's mana pool, Sona remains a very good top lane champion. She has more trouble sustaining early but it still able to utilize the solo lane experience to push her into a hypercarry state by mid-game. While she stops being a lane bully as soon as most enemy champions hit their level 2 to 3 powerspike, her ability to stay relevant in games still supports picking her up as long as your team has either some sort of front-line or peel ability.
Soraka [Tier 2 Support]
Nerfs to Soraka as a top laner essentially gutted Soraka as a dominant early game support. Her laning phase is significantly weaker, and generally speaking she doesn't win every trade for free anymore (even if she hits her Q). Overall, Soraka as a support is now a very passive lane that looks to survive for levels. She's still viable, but not nearly as good as she was before.
Talon [Tier 3 Jungle]
The buffs to Talon's jungle minion damage still don't make up for his poor jungle presence. As a burst champion that needs to get his stacks to maximize his damage, he doesn't get the full effect of his kit on the majority of ganks. Meanwhile, his gap closer is good but the cooldown is too high for him to actually camp a lane repeatedly like other jungle champions can do.
- The purpose of this list is for discussion and to provide a starting point for champion selection.
