Instructions and Caveats
- Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
- Champions UNDERLINEDmay be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
- Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier, each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
- Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
- Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for the solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
- The creator of this list is diamond so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.
League of Legends Tier List Descriptions
God Tier: These champions are almost impossible to keep down. If your team doesn't make it a priority to shut down these champions and shut them down hard, even if they lose their lane, lose in CS, and it's their first time playing the champion, they can be a massive nuisance for your team. On the other hand, if they're actually good at the champion...that's when it's time to throw in the towel.Tier 1: These champions generally do very well regardless, and have some sort of advantage over most other champions. When they do well, their team does well. Even when they don't do well, their team still has a good chance of a comeback victory by utilizing one or more aspects of their late-game utility.
Tier 2: This is the Tier of balanced champions where Riot shoots to place their designs. These champions generally do well in their own right and are very strong picks with a good chance of winning. However, they're not overpowered by any means and do have their weaknesses.
Tier 3: These champions can still do very well, but tend to need a little more snowballing to get rolling. Even if they get an early lead, it's still very possible to turn the tides on them with just a mistake or two. They may also have some weaknesses that can be capitalized on.
Tier 4: These champions are either underpowered or offer less reward than other champions for the same amount of effort. These champions basically start winning from the get-go or get made fun of for the rest of the game. They need gold to do their job correctly, and if they don't get enough of it, they become sandbags for the enemy team to punch. Chances of a comeback with one of these champions feeding on your team is almost none.
Thoughts on Win Rates
With enough playtime, a high win rate on a champion indicates *something* generally goes right, and a low win rate indicates that whatever is happening in games with this champion isn't in their favor.A low win rate may mean a champion is being played incorrectly and is stronger than his win rate indicates, but a top 25 win rate (with 120 champions) almost always indicates that a champion is at least a good candidate for Tier 1 or high Tier 2 if the sample size is large enough.
This means that champions with high win rates do not mean that they're necessarily GOOD right now, especially if they have a low play rate or tend to get into favorable match-ups. If we feel this is the case, these champions will place differently on this tier list than you'd think.
Similarly, champions with low win rates that are still within the acceptable deviations may end up slightly higher than you'd expect from a champion with mediocre win rates.
If there are champions on this tier list with low overall play rates but good win rates after relatively few games of practice, it may mean that players that pick those champions up just to try them are bringing down the average. If this is the case, we will place them higher on the list.
More thoughts on win rates here.
Counter Picking Champions
In Tier 3 of this tier list, we've placed certain champions that are good as a second pick, but can get spanked hard if they end up first picking by a variety of meta champions. If you're good at a large variety of champions, picking a champion that counters your lane is a good place to start. If you can get a slight advantage and don't have a clear experience advantage, picking a champion that both places high on this tier list and also counters your enemy lane may give you enough to win a game.Check out a few of our more popular champion counter guides:
LoL Tier List Champion Explanations
Ashe [God Tier Bot]
Ashe continues to dominate. She performs exceptionally well with both all-in supports and enchanter supports, making her exceedingly flexible with any team composition. The amount of mobility in the game you would think hinders her performance, but in fact, it helps her. The damage champions are able to put out at long-range now makes her ultimate more valuable than ever before. A good Ashe ultimate or two is more than enough to change the game by itself.
Diana [Tier 2 Jungle]
Diana jungle is typically a champion role that tends to be very lackluster early game and then picks up once she gets her ultimate. Generally speaking, losing out on the early game pressure isn't worth it for most teams as it completely negates the effect of the jungle. On the other hand, Diana does have excellent wave clear and also deals more than enough damage when she hits six to make the investment worthwhile. If your team can hold their own pre-6, she's an absolute monster.
Ekko [God Tier Jungle]
Ekko continues to excel in both Jungle and Mid lane, and his incredible mobility and damage enable him to dish enough damage to one-shot squishies consistently even without landing his stun. Meanwhile, if you do land your AOE CC, he becomes a 1v9 carry.
Jax [God Tier Top]
In his current state, Jax isn't exactly oppressive early to mid. However, what he does have is consistency and the ability to snowball heavily. Jax top is a huge ticking timer where you know once he gets two items he'll be hopscotching from champion to champion and ending teams by himself. Even lanes that he loses to early are rarely able to deal with him later in the game.
Kai'Sa [Tier 1 Marksman]
Kai'Sa is by far the most popular marksman in the game. If you master her she's quite good and able to dish enough damage to solo carry. On the other hand, her low range and somewhat high-risk playstyle in solo queue tend to be less consistent than most of the God Tier champions on this list. Thus, we've marked her a couple points as a result of her kit's natural tendency to go for highlight reels rather than playing the game as succinctly as possible to end in a win.
Miss Fortune [God Tier Marksman]
Placing Miss Fortune in God Tier is going to be very controversial. However, she's honestly one of the most oppressive lane marksmen in the game if you play her correctly. Even if you just slowly farm up with klepto she can blaze through mid-game champions like a hot knife through butter. Her attack speed steroid allows her to get two damage items rather than attack speed early, and her gold generation gives her the ability to get them much faster than other marksmen. While some people may complain she does no damage against tanks, as long as you don't die early game in quantity she's highly effective and consistent to play.
Qiyana [Tier 2 Mid]
This one is an interesting assassin to place. Her kit is incredibly nuanced and difficult to make snap decisions with. Picking up different elements can make or break any given trade, and her ultimate ranges from insanely game-changing to "nice colors". That being said, I think that given some range for error, she's still quite good and somewhat balanced. All her win rates reflect her being a bad champion, but with practice, she snowballs incredibly hard.
Renekton [Tier 2 Mid]
For more detail be sure to check out the Renekton mid article! In essence, he's an extremely good melee counter and deals insanely good damage output. If you have some sort of ranged champion top lane picking him up against any melee mid-laner is optimal and can easily snowball games. Even if you end up against a ranged spellcaster, he can still deal with them as long as they don't have some sort of fast knockback.
Ryze [Tier 2 Mid]
Ryze Tier 2? This guy must be crazy! Ryze at his core is a champion that isn't difficult to get the hang of, but at the same time, he's not a champion you can just pick up and play just by looking at his skills and build paths. In order to succeed at Ryze, you need to understand the interaction between his spells and the optimal order to use them in. At the highest levels, Ryze is incredibly good and can 1v5. However, for most players, you'll find you do significantly less than expected damage and end up feeling like you're missing an ultimate.
