In a completely zany meta that brings back strategies we haven't seen since Season 1 and 2, players are trying out more things than ever before and push League to its limits. While some champions are certainly getting more love than others, it's almost a free-for-all bot lane where anything goes.
The latest trend is to play late game mages like Vladimir and Swain combined with some early game mages like Brand. This allows the team to really control the flow of the game from start to finish.
Luckily, there's still some order to the game, and many of the other roles should have familiar faces.

Instructions and Caveats:
- Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
- Champions UNDERLINEDmay be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
- Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
- Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
- Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
- The creator of this list is diamond, so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.
Champion Explanations
- Brand [Tier 1 Bot] - Brand's no newcomer to bot, but with so many bruisers to feast on, he's certainly doing better than expected as a farming bot laner. With marksmen nerfed to the point where the bot-lane meta is out of whack, placing one of the highest damage burst champions down there doesn't seem like a bad idea.
- Garen [Tier 1 Top] - Garen's skin did more than make him look awesome, it also opened up people's eyes to how good he is in the current meta. His spin-to-win formula certainly works better at lower divisions than higher ones, but it's such as simple winning formula that it can really do well at almost all divisions.
- Heimerdinger [Tier 1 Bot] - Heimerdinger as bot laner first came up on the professional scene while paired with Fiddlesticks. With the meta so crazy in the current patch, pitching in Heimerdinger as an early game tower pushing specialist actually works considerably well. I wouldn't say it's game-breaking by any means, but it's definitely strong and works well in a duo lane to keep up lane pressure.
- Irelia [Tier 1 Top] - Post nerfs, Irelia is strong in the right hands, but definitely takes some more finesse to play. However, she can still snowball incredibly hard and does well in lane as long as you understand the match-ups.
- Kai'Sa [Tier 1 Bot] - The premier duelist and late-game ADC powerhouse, Kai'Sa is one of the few champions that escaped the marksman purge of 2018. She still continues to be strong in all metas and is able to really perform well in solo queue as a result of her high mobility and self-peeling tools.
- Kindred [Tier 1 Jungle] - Patch 8.13's Kindred buffs worked quite well to bring them back into the fold. The extra jungle sustain helps them keep up the farm tempo and pressure, resulting in faster power spikes and more consistent ganks/
- Miss Fortune [God Tier Bot] - Miss Fortune in the current meta is one of the few marksmen that escaped nearly unscathed. She was never really powerful using crit items, so lethality items are still perfectly strong for her to use on a daily basis. This results in a marksman on par with marksmen at their peak, but without the nerfs that the rest are suffering from.
- Nocturne [God Tier Jungle] - Lethal Tempo Nocturne is insanely good right now, and combined with some lethality, completely dominates the game starting from level 6 onwards.
- Swain [Tier 1 Bot] - Similar to Vladimir, Swain works surprisingly well bot lane. He has the ability to 1v2 mid to late game, freeing up your support to roam and wreck havoc on the other lanes. His early game isn't amazing, but you can supplement it with an early-game champion as support like Brand,
- Talon [God Tier Mid] - Talon in the the current meta is almost unstoppable. His kill power often doesn't even require the second part of his ultimate, meaning he can blow-up enemy champions and get away invisibly for free.
- Tryndamere [Tier 1 Top] - Since the release of the conqueror rune, Tryndamere has been incredibly strong. Meanwhile, in the current meta, there are fewer marksmen for tower poking. This means he can safely split-push and siege towers without worrying the enemy team will chip down his allied towers for free.
- Vladimir [Tier 2 Bot] - As a bot laner, Vladimir struggles a bit during the early game depending on who his support is. However, once he gets to mid game, his ability to 1v2 is greatly amplified. He's excellent against bruisers and is very difficult to dive post level 2~3, greatly reducing the potential coming from kill lanes.
- The purpose of this list is for discussion and to provide a starting point for champion selection.
